By the time I returned to Neo’s private quarters, roughly an hour and a half remained. Neo and Kouta were in a separate room discussing what came next— In all likelihood, what came next would have nothing to do with Kunagisa and I— so I was all alone. Surrounded by paintings, I didn’t utter a word; I just sat on the sofa.

The ticking of my watch was deafening. If I had known this was going to happen, I would have worn my digital one. That said, Kunagisa’s tinkering had turned my other watch into something unthinkable. Besides, this analogue watch was a gift from Hime, which brought with it a sense of obligation, so I suppose I never really had a choice to begin with.

“A choice, huh— Wouldn’t that be nice?”

To choose.

The act of choosing.

I pulled Misachi’s Jericho from out of my belt and tried aiming down its sights. My form was that of a complete amateur. However— so long as I didn’t lose my cool like Misachi did— handling it didn’t seem all that difficult. There was no need for any formal training, I could get used to aiming it with just a little practice.

“This country sure is peaceful, isn’t it…”

The ‘means of escape’ Kouta mentioned should be blindingly obvious. First, she dragged Misachi and Shito inside and tied the still-unconscious Misachi up with a computer cable. Even if she hadn’t, it likely would have taken her half the day to wake up, but it didn’t hurt to be cautious, or so she insisted. If you’re wondering what we did with Shito, Kouta tossed him to me (literally) and I slung him over my shoulder.

“Why should a woman have to do all the heavy lifting, did they not teach you morals?”

“I’m a feminist. I believe men and women should be treated equally.”

“Then ‘tis only right you should carry him, dear friend.” Kouta smirked. “Men and women being equal, ‘tis abundantly clear which of us is in charge.”

It was.

The reason Kouta had me carry Shito obviously wasn’t out of consideration for him. Essentially, Ougaki Shito's role was to act as a key. We used his unconscious body to pass the retina scanner. He also had his key card on him, and I’d heard his ID number many times by this point, so I was able to memorize it. I couldn’t quite remember if it was ikwe9f2ma444 and ikwe9mada423, but when Kouta pressed me for an answer, I somehow managed to come up with something. The same went with the password. There was still some level of uncertainty (if only Kunagisa were here), but it seems like I had gotten it right. That said, the ID number and password felt almost incidental when it came to a security system like this. What really mattered was the key card, the retina scan— and the voice recognition. Essentially, everything that proved you were who you said you were.
